Of major importance to most when it comes to dog collars is identification. The tags worn on these help a person identify a lost animal or know about how safe it is. A lot of regions require dogs to wear these. In some areas, the policy is more heavily enforced than others.

Dog collars may also be worn for purposes of training or control. They can be used to keep the pet from running away. They can also be used with a leash to get the animal used to walking around with particular humans.

Finally, these items are also useful on health levels. For instance, some may operate as flea collars. This is a subtle and simple form of pest control.
